I spent most of the fall semester of my Vassar College senior year at Thubten Choling, the dharma retreat center founded by Kalu Rinpoche, helping those about to enter into three-year retreat with last-minute tasks, like building fences and digging latrines. I also began to practice what are known as the four extraordinary preliminary meditation practices. Depending on one’s diligence, these practices require no less than six to nine months of full time effort to complete. At school I was busy writing my senior thesis in independent studies.
Andrew experimented with hallucinogenic drugs (I did not), and left school and everything else behind, trying to become (although he would not have known the term) an anagarika or cha dral wa, someone who simply walks away from the concerns of the world and this life, in search of ultimate truth through spiritual practice. He felt compelled to push his way forward, without holding back anything. A week or so later, he was arrested as a vagrant some-where in Ontario, after holing up in a utility closet to wait out a storm.
In late 1980, at the suggestion of my college roommate James Forro, I attended the first of many meditation retreats at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachussetts. This Christmas retreat was taught by Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein. The practice was deceptively simple.
