Such was the portrait of the immigrant intellectual drawn by two militant New Dealers, Joseph Dorfman and Rexford Guy Tugwell, in two jointly writ- 32 Z Chapter Two ten articles that appeared in 1938. Scintillating in their wit and sneering in their condescension, these essays are important as the first sustained study of Lieber that had appeared in more than half a century.
